In yet another well-pitched, low scoring and quick moving game, the Hickory Crawdads rode a 4th inning, 3-RBI double by Nick Williams all the way to a 3-2 win over the Lexington Legends in front of 3,333 fans Wednesday afternoon at Crawdads Stadium. In the final game of their 3-game series, the 'Dads and Legends continued their trend of fast paced affairs. The Legends took game one on Monday 3-2 with a game time of 2:28, while the Crawdads bounced back with a 2-1 win on Tuesday in just 2:12. Wednesday's matinee contest also flew by in 2:24, with all the Crawdads offense coming on one swing of the bat.
The 'Dads entered the fourth inning down 1-0 against Lexington starter Daniel Stumpf. Hickory center fielder Lewis Brinson started the rally with a one-out walk, followed one out later with a walk to Nick Urbanus and a hit-by-pitch by Luis Marte. That brought Williams to the plate with the bases loaded and two down. In by far the best scoring opportunity of the day, Williams cashed in with a double to right-center to score all three base runners and put the 'Dads ahead 3-1.
That was just enough offense for Connor Sadzeck and the Hickory bullpen. Sadzeck (7-2) earned the win for going the first five innings and allowing one run on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Reliever Ryan Bores followed in the sixth and proceeded to toss three frames with one run allowed on one hit and 3 Ks. That bridged the gap to Jose Leclerc, who earned his first save of the year for his perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Stumpf (5-6) ended up with the loss for the Legends with three runs allowed on four hits, two walks and six strikeouts in four innings pitched. Williams ended the game 1-4 with the game-changing double, while Nick Vickerson went 1-2 with a single and two hit-by-pitches.
The win give the Crawdads (5-2) the series over the Legends (4-3) two games to one and also ends the home stand with five wins in seven games. The 'Dads will now hit the road for a week, with four games in Charleston and three more in Savannah. First pitch Thursday night against the RiverDogs is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
