Ninth Inning Rally Dooms 'Dads PDF Print

The Hickory Crawdads were well on their way to a 2-1 win over the Lexington Legends Monday night before a costly error and mother nature got in the way, as the 'Dads fell 3-2 after enduring a one hour and four minute rain delay in the ninth inning.
The Crawdads entered the eighth inning with a 2-1 lead over the Legends and reliever Cody Kendall on the mound. After putting two runners on with one out it looked like Kendall would escape the inning unscathed, but a throwing error by second baseman Ryan Rua allowed a unearned run to score to tie the game at 2-2.
Kendall was back on the mound for the top of the ninth and quickly recorded two outs before the rain began to fall. That's when the Legends rallied for the go-ahead run on a two out, RBI single from ninth place hitter Alex Hudak to take a 3-2 advantage.
Once the half inning concluded the tarp was pulled and both teams sat through the hour plus rain delay. The game finally resumed at 10:30 pm, but the 'Dads were unable to rally with Nick Williams striking out with a runner on first to end the game at 3-2.
Prior to the downpour the Crawdads had enjoyed a well-pitched lead as ace C.J. Edwards held the Legends to only one run on four hits, no walks and 6 Ks over five innings pitched.
The Crawdads offense backed their pitcher with a run in the second on an RBI groundout from Nick Vickerson and another tally in the fifth when Luis Marte scored on a double steal with Joey Gallo to put Hickory ahead 2-1.
Williams finished the night 2-3 with a triple and two walks, while Nomar Mazara went 2-4 with a pair of doubles.
Kendall (1-2) ended up with the loss for the 'Dads while Lexington reliever John Walter (1-0) got the win with a scoreless eighth in his SAL debut. Mark Peterson (7) earned the save for his scoreless ninth.
The loss drops the Crawdads to 3-2 in the 2nd half while the Legends improve to 4-1 with the win. The two clubs will match up again Tuesday night for game two of their 3-game series at 7:00 p.m.
NOTES: The Crawdads did not hit a home run tonight, so their season homer total still sits at 115.
