Junior right-handed pitcher Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C.), who was selected in the 14th round by the Chicago White Sox (pick 423) in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, flew to Chicago to sign his professional contract last week. He was assigned to the White Sox's Class A rookie league team in Bristol. Va.,  of the

Appalachian League on June 20.
The White Sox were Barnette's second choice. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the ninth round of the MLB Draft following his senior year at Hickory High School in June of 2010. But Barnette elected to stay in school and attended UNC-Charlotte, instead.
Barnette is a former Freshman All-American and Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Year. He has amassed an 18-8 record with Charlotte and a career earned run average of 3.37 in 43 starts. His ERA and games started total are ranked seventh in program history, while the 18 wins are tied for tenth-most at Charlotte. He has recorded 148 strikeouts in 235 innings pitched in three seasons with the 49ers.
