Jones Named All-State, Headed To San Jose PDF Print

The accolades just keep pouring in for Ryder Jones. Jones, who graduated from Watauga High on June 8, has been a very busy guy the last several weeks. He was named first team all-Northwestern 3A/4A Conference and the NW3A/4A Conference Player of the Year; he was named the North Carolina Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year (the first Pioneer ever to win that award); he was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the second round of the Major League Amateur Baseball Draft on June 6, and he was the first player the Giants signed as the two sides came to terms on June 10.
And now, Jones has been named to the N.C. Preps Class 4A All-State Team. Jones is the second WHS player to earn all-state honors. Matt Proffitt, a rising sophomore at Brevard College (a Division II school in Brevard, N.C.), was named all-state last year.
Jones batted .461 with 11 home runs and 43 runs-batted-in for the Pioneers in 2013. He was 4-3 on the mound with a 1.23 earned-run-average.
Jones was introduced to Willie McCovey. In the clubhouse, he met Hunter Pence, a former second-round pick himself. And in the dugout, he chatted with Brandon Crawford, who spoke to the kid about playing shortstop in front of a packed house. The Giants plan to move Jones from shortstop to third base.
“Being a shortstop, it’s going to get some taking used to to go over to third base, but I’m open to it,” Jones said. “Anything to get on the field. I just want to get out and play. It’s definitely going to take some extra ground balls, some extra drill work, but I’ll get used to it pretty quick.”
Jones said he has had grandparents living in the SouthBay and Ukiah.
He turned down a scholarship to Stanford to play pro ball. His signing bonus: $872,100.
“It was a tough decision,” he said. “At the end of the day, I just thought that right now I wanted to start my professional career as quick as I could. (I got picked) by a great organization, so I chose the professional route over college.”
Jones will begin his minor league assignment Friday with the San Jose Giants in the advanced Class A California League.
