In the next to last game of the first half of the season the Hickory Crawdads had one of their most dominating performances of the year, as the 'Dads slammed four home runs while picking up a season-high 21 hits in a 12-0 blowout win over the Delmarva Shorebirds. The victory lowers the 'Dads magic number for winning the Northern Division to one with one day left in the first half.
Eight of the nine Crawdads batters had a multi-hit game in the route, led by Ryan Rua who went 3-5 with two home runs, a double and three RBI. The red-hot Joey Gallo also went deep again, finishing the night 3-5 with a homer and 4 RBI. Both Gallo and Rua are now tied for the Minor League home run lead with 22 long balls on the year.
The offense came early and often for the 'Dads, with the club scoring 3 runs in the first, 4 in the third, 2 in the fourth and 3 more times in the seventh. Gallo kick started the offense in the 1st with a 2-run homer to right, while Ronald Guzman also picked up an RBI single in the frame to put Hickory ahead 3-0.
The led swelled to 7-0 with four more runs in the third. Nomar Mazara got it started with an RBI single to right, Nick Vickerson chipped in with a bases-loaded, RBI walk, and Gallo came through again with a 2-RBI single to right.
The fourth inning saw two more Crawdads runs to push the lead to 9-0. Rua led off the frame with his first long ball of the night, a solo shot to left, before Lewis Brinson picked up an RBI single to left.
The scoring finally came to a close in the seventh with two more homers and three more runs to cap the score at 12-0. Vickerson led off the inning with a solo blast to left, his third of the year, while Rua came through again with a 2-run dinger to left-center.
Nearly lost among all the offense was the third shutout of the year by the Hickory pitching staff. Starter Connor Sadzeck (5-2) looked good making his first start since coming off the DL, with the right-hander tossing five shutout innings on just two hits, three walks and five strikeouts while picking up the win.
Relievers Ryan Bores and Jose Valdespina followed with a combined four shutout innings to complete the shutout.
Delmarva starting pitcher Lex Rutledge (3-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in his two innings on the mound.
The win moves the Crawdads (39-30) magic number to just one with only day left in the first half. A 'Dads win or a Hagerstown loss will clinch the first half Northern Division Championship for Hickory. The 'Dads will wrap up the first half of the season and their four-game series with the Shorebirds (29-37) on Sunday at 5:00 pm.
NOTES: The Crawdads wrap up their four-game series with the Shorebirds and the first half of the season Sunday. It's the Car Show Cruise-In, Craw"DADS" Night, Prostate Cancer Awareness Night and Splash Day at the ballpark....
