Taylor Drummonds, who graduated from Watauga High last Saturday, closed out her prep career Friday night at the New Balance Nationals at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C. Drummonds, a two-time place finisher for the Pioneers in the girl's pole vault at the indoor and outdoor state championships her senior year, finished in a three-way tie for 12th on Friday night in the girl's pole vault in the Emerging Elite Division.
Drummonds cleared the bar with an effort of ten-feet, 11-inches. She finished in a three-way tie with Kennedy Shank of Dillsburg, PA., and Jenna Calandro of Sandy Hook, CT. Drummonds qualified for nationals by winning the pole vault event at the Champions Tune Up in Kernersville, N.C., June 1. She turned in her best effort of the season at that meet, clearing the bar at 11-6.
Jackie McNutley of Frederick, MD., won the event Friday with a jump of 12-2.75. She bested the field by nearly a foot. Grace Wiesbecker of Tivoli, N.Y., finished a distant second (11-10.75).
Drummonds, who will attend East Carolina University on a track scholarship this fall, finished in a fifth-place tie at the state indoor track meet; she finished fourth at the outdoor championships. Drummonds was WHS' first national qualifier since the girl's 4x800-meter relay team in 2010.
