Shubert Named N.C. Gatorade Player of Year PDF Print

Senior Lexi Shubert of Fred T. Foard High was named the 2013 Gatorade North Carolina Softball Player of the Year. Shubert, a dominant pitcher and a four-time Northwestern 3A/4A Conference selection, is the first Gatorade North Carolina Softball Player of the Year to be chosen from Fred T. Foard.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Shubert as North Carolina’s best high school softball player.
The 5-foot-7 right-hander led the Tigers (23-5) to the West 3A semifinals this past season. Shubert was 23-5 record with a 0.51 ERA. She tossed a no-hitter and stuck out 328 batters in 190.2 innings pitched. Offensively, Shubert, who will play softball at USC-Upstate, a Division I school in Spartanburg, S.C., and a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, also batted .461 with two home runs, 12 doubles and 31 RBI. She was a four-time All-Conference selection.
Shubert maintained a 3.96 GPA in the classroom,and she is a member of the Student Council and a math tutor for middle school students. She has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, Operation Christmas Child and a homeless shelter.
A player from the Northwestern 3A-4A Conference has one the award three out of the past four seasons with Alexander Central’s Chelsea Wilkinson getting the honor for the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Shubert is the second player to win the N.C. Gatorade award this season. Ryder Jones of Watauga High was named the N.C. Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year of May 31. Jones, who has signed with Stanford to play baseball next season, was selected in the second round (64th pick) of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the San Francisco Giants on June 6.
