The Hickory Crawdads battled rain all day Sunday, with their final game against the Greenville Drive being delayed by one hour and 35 minutes. By the end of the night the rain finally prevailed but so did the 'Dads, as the Crawdads beat the Drive 6-3 in a 7-inning, rain shortened game from Fluor Field.
An originally planned 4:05 pm first pitch didn't happen until 5:39 pm due to yet another round of storms moving through the Greenville area. Once the game did start however, both starting pitchers were in fine form. Jacob Dahlstrand of the Drive and C.J. Edwards of the 'Dads cruised through the first two innings keeping the game scoreless.
The Drive were able to break through first with a little help from the 'Dads defense, scoring two unearned runs on one hit and two errors in the third to take a 2-0 lead.
The 'Dads offense quickly responded the next half inning, exploding for six runs on six hits to take a 6-2 advantage in the 4th. Five of the six hits in the frame went for extra bases, led by Joey Gallo's solo homer to center to start the inning. Nick Williams followed with a triple to center, Ryan Rua drove him in with an RBI sacrifice fly to right, Jorge Alfaro singled to center, Nomar Mazara hit an RBI double to right, Ronald Guzman doubled off the wall in left to plate Mazara and Luis Marte doubled inside the line at first to score Guzman and finish the scoring.
Greenville would pick up one last run in the sixth, scoring another unearned tally due to the Crawdads third error of the night to make the score 6-3. The Crawdads came up to bat to start the eighth, only to have the rain return and the game called after seven innings.
Edwards, (6-2) earned the win after allowing only three unearned runs on one hit, three walks and eight strikeouts over 5 innings pithed. Dahlstrand (1-2) took the loss for allowing six runs on eight hits, four walks and five Ks during 5.2 frames.
Gallo led the Hickory hitters going 2-4 with his 15th homer of the year. Williams also finished with a multi-hit game with a double and triple in four at-bats.
The win keeps the Crawdads (35-27) a half game ahead of Hagerstown in the SAL Northern Division with only seven games left in the first half of the season. Greenville falls to 19-41 with the loss. The 'Dads will now travel to Hagerstown to battle the Suns for four games with a playoff birth on the line. First pitch Monday night is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
NOTES: The Crawdads stay on the road for 4 more games over the next 3 days.
