A suspect is dead and officers who responded to a domestic situation are on automatic administrative leave after an officer involved shooting in far southern Caldwell County early yesterday. The call came in at 7:39 AM, the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office dispatched to a domestic call at 5490 Northwood Dr., Hickory, the North Lakes Community on the Caldwell side of Lake Hickory. Officers arrived on the scene and spoke to the female victim, then the deputies went to the suspect’s location and attempting to contact him, but as officers approached the residence where the suspect was located officers heard loud noises inside the basement area of the residence.  Officers went to the rear of the house and attempted to make contact with the suspect.  The suspect exited the residence armed with firearms and an exchange of gunfire occurred between the officers and the suspect. In that exchange of gunfire, the suspect was shot and died at the scene. The officers involved were not injured in the altercation.  The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations has been called into the investigation, and the officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave which is standard procedure for any officer involved shooting.  Caldwell Sheriff Alan Jones said the name of the suspect or the name of officers involved in this incident will not be released at this time.
