The potent Hickory Crawdads lineup took a few innings to get started Wednesday night, but once they did the route was on as the 'Dads clubbed a season-high 16 hits, including four home runs, in a
12-4 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Ronald Guzman, Nick Vickerson, Ryan Rua and Nick Williams all went yard for the 'Dads in the blowout win, pushing Hickory's already Minor League leading home run total to 80 bombs on the year.
The BlueClaws took an early lead on the 'Dads with three runs in the first and another in the second to go ahead 4-0. It was all Hickory from that point though, as the Crawdads would go on to score 12 unanswered runs.
It was the newly added Guzman who kick started the offense in the bottom of the second, lining an RBI single to left to cut the score to 4-1. Guzman came through again in the fourth, launching a two-run homer off the scoreboard in right-center to make the score 4-3.
Later that same inning Vickerson would launch his long ball. Also a 2-run blast, the home run gave the 'Dads a 5-4 lead they would never relinquish. Hickory would score two more runs in the fifth thanks to a Lewis Brinson RBI single and a Lakewood error to push their lead to 7-4. The sixth inning saw the 'Dads pull away with four more runs to make the score 11-4. Rua had the big blast of the frame with a 2-run homer to right while Williams also kicked in an RBI single.
The Crawdads finished the scoring in the eighth, when Williams launched a solo homer to right to put Hickory ahead 12-4. All nine starters for the 'Dads reached base, while eight chipped in at least one hit. The Crawdads 16 total hits also tied a season high for the club.
Williams led the pack going 3-5 with a home run, a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Guzman finished the night 2-4 with his homer and three RBI, Rua went 2-5 with a long ball, two RBI and two runs, while Vickerson ended the night 1-3 with a home run, two RBI, two walks and two runs scored.
Crawdads starting pitcher Ryan Bores (2-1) was the benefactor of all the offensive support, as the right-hander earned the win after throwing five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. Relievers Cody Kendall, Joe Burns and Keone Kela combined to toss four shutout innings of relief. Lakewood starter Jonathan Musser (1-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits over his four innings pitched.
The win for the Crawdads (32-15) and the two corresponding doubleheader losses by Hagerstown launches the 'Dads back into first place in the SAL Northern Division with only 13 games left in the first half of the season. Lakewood (23-33) falls nine games back of the 'Dads with the loss.
Hickory will go for the 3-game sweep of the 'Claws Thursday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm.
