After limiting four conference champions to just two earned runs in 15.1 innings of relief last month, Appalachian State University pitcher Tyler Moore (Banner Elk, N.C./Watauga) has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Month for May, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Moore went 1-0 with a sparkling 1.17 ERA in five relief appearances last month. The five outings came exclusively against teams that won their respective conference championships — SoCon Tournament champion Elon (May 4), West Coast Conference regular-season champion Gonzaga (May 12), Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season and tournament champion North Carolina (May 14) and SoCon regular-season champion Western Carolina (May 17 and 22). He struck out eight and did not issue a walk in his 15.1 innings of work in May.
Moore did not allow a run over the first three appearances of the month, highlighted by striking out three in three scoreless innings at No. 2 North Carolina. However, he saved his best performance for the SoCon Tournament when he worked a career-high seven innings out of the bullpen to earn the win in Appalachian State’s 15-4 triumph over No. 29 Western Carolina.
The right-hander entered the contest versus WCU with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the third inning but induced an infield fly and a double play to get the Mountaineers out of the jam with the score still knotted at 2-2. Moore went on to limit the Catamounts’ high-powered offense to just one earned run over seven frames to help eliminate the regular-season champs from the tournament, a defeat that was likely the death knell for Western’s hopes for an NCAA regional berth.
Moore battled back from an early-season wrist injury to make 18 appearances out of the bullpen and posted a 1-0 record and team-low 2.45 ERA on the campaign. The fifth-year senior graduated from Appalachian State in May but has received a rare sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA due to injuries that have cost him more than two full seasons during his career. He will enroll in graduate studies at Appalachian in the fall and will return to the Mountaineers’ pitching staff as a sixth-year senior in 2014.
The monthly honor is the first of Moore’s career and Appalachian State’s second of the season. Shortstop Will Callaway (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) was named the SoCon’s Player of the Month for April.
