Watauga High cross country and track coach Randy McDonough has announced that senior Bryan Brackney, who will graduate on Saturday, will walk on at UNC-Wilmington to run track and cross country

this fall.
Brackney, a state qualifier in cross country and indoor track, posted a second-place finish in the boy's 400-meter run at the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Track & Field Championships at Lenior-Rhyne University on April 24-25. He crossed the finish line in 50.66 seconds, just .36 seconds behind Cory Stinson of Hickory, who won the event in 50.30.
Brackney was a member of WHS' 4x800-meter relay team at the state indoor track meet that finished ninth in 8:27.21; he had a 15th-place finish in the boy's 1,000-meter run (2:46.70). He finished sixth (17:42) at the NW3A/4A Cross Country Championships last fall, he turned in a 21st-place finish (17:00) at the Class 4A Western Regional at McAlpine Park in Charlotte on October 27; he was 73rd at the Class 4A state meet (16:52.53) on November 3 at Beeson Park in Kernersville, N.C.
Taylor Drummonds, who will attend East Carolina University on a track scholarship in the fall, will compete at the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., June 14-16. Drummonds won the girl's pole vault with a personal-best effort of 11-feet, six-inches last weekend in Kernersville. Drummonds is WHS' first New Balance qualifier since the girl's 4x800 relay team did it in June of 2011.
Drummonds tied for fifth at the indoor state meet in the pole vault with an effort of ten-feet; she finished fourth at the outdoor state meet with a personal-best effort at the time of 11-feet.
