Taylor Drummonds continued her successful pace in the pole vault by finishing first on Saturday at the Champions Tune Up at Bishop McGuinness High School in Kernersville, N.C. Drummonds, a senior at Watauga High, won the pole vault on Saturday by clearing the ball with an effort off 11-feet, six inches, tying her personal
best in that event.
Drummonds will be attending East Carolina University on a track scholarship in the fall. She placed twice at states this season. Drummonds, who was WHS' only place finisher in track this season, tied for fifth at the indoor championships in February; she finished fourth at the outdoor championships in May.
Saturday's effort has qualified Drummonds for the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., June 14-16. Drummonds is WHS' first national qualifier since the girl's 4x800-meter relay team qualified for nationals in 2011.
Doria Kosmala, another WHS senior, finished seventh in the one-mile run by crossing the finish line in 5:16.27. For the boys, Michael Holland of the Pioneers finished 25th in the one-mile run (4:47.36), Zack Styron was tenth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.54) and eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.31).
