UPDATED: Pudney Named All-NW3A/4A PDF Print

Watauga High senior Riley Pudney was the only Pioneers on the 2013 Northwestern 3A/4A All-Conference Team. The Pioneers (6-12 overall; 2-10 NW3A/4A), who struggled this season, finished in sixth place and missed the state playoffs for the first time since 2009.

The Pioneers, despite their disappointing campaign, defeated South Caldwell 3-2 in the opening round of the conference tournament before they were eliminated by Fred T. Foard 3-1 in the tournament semifinals. An impressive showing by the Pioneers when you consider Lexi Shubert of the Tigers tossed a perfect game against them in a 14-0 loss on April 24.

Taylor Drummonds and Kim Robinson of the Pioneers were named honorable mention; Robinson, who originally singed with Lenior-Rhyne University, will now attend Milligan College, an NAIA school in Johnson City, TN., and a member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

Alexander Central, which won the regular-season title, the tournament championship and its eighth state title, led the way with seven all-conference selections; Fred T. Foard, the No.1 seed among the 3-A schools and the No.2 seed overall, had six all-conference selections.
Taylor Wike of Alexander Central (33-1) was named the Player of the Year; Lexi Shubert of Fred T. Foard was the Pitcher of the Year; Jan Davis of St. Stephens was named the Coach of the Year.
