In yet another well pitched game from Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, GA, the Hickory Crawdads came up on the short end of a 2-1 loss to the Augusta GreenJackets, sending the 'Dads out of town
having lost two out of three games.
In what was the best pitching matchup of the series, Crawdads ace C.J. Edwards went up against Joe Biagini of the GreenJackets. Edwards had good stuff, but was lacking command as the front-line starter walked four and struck out seven while needing 93 pitches to get through 3.2 shutout innings.
Biagini proved more economical, as the right-hander celebrated his birthday by allowing one run on six hits, one walk and nine strikeouts over 6.2 innings pitched. The Crawdads jumped ahead in the third when the suddenly hot-hitting David Lyon doubled to left field and came in one out later on an RBI single by Nick Urbanus.
Augusta tied the game in the fifth, taking advantage of a throwing error by Joey Gallo at third base to deadlock the score at 1-1. The GreenJackets would take the lead in the next inning, when catcher Eric Sim would come in to score on a 2-out, RBI single by Trevor Brown.
The 'Dads had opportunities to score again in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but left a man in scoring position in each frame. Also notable was the lack of home runs by the Crawdads, marking the first time this season that the normally slugging squad went four games without a dinger.
Biagini (3-1) earned the win for his impressive outing while Hickory reliever Keone Kela (1-2) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the sixth. Augusta reliever Tyler Mizenko picked up his SAL leading 13th save of the year by striking out the side in the ninth.
The loss drops Hickory (29-22) two games back of Hagerstown in the SAL North Division while Augusta (29-23) pulls to within two games of Charleston in the South Division with the win. The Crawdads will try to get back in the win column on Thursday, when they open up a 4-game series in Rome against the Braves at 7:00 pm.
NOTES: The Crawdads will continue their 7-game road trip with a 4-game set in Rome on Thursday.
