Ashe County High freshman Brianna McCoy, a starting pitcher for the Huskies varsity team this past spring, has been selected to play in the North Carolina
Powerade State Games.
McCoy will play for the Region 7 softball team. North Carolina is divided into eight regions. Region 7 consists of players from Ashe, Alleghany, Watauga, Wilkes, Avery, Surry, Yadkin, Davie, Caldwell, Burk, Alexander, Iredell and Catawba Counties.
The state tournament, a four-game, round-robin affair, will be played in Charlotte, June 24-27. Wingate University and Forest Hills High School will host the tournament. The medal-round games will be played at Wingate on June 26. Consolation games will be played at Forest Hills.
Region 7 begins competition on Monday, June 24. There will also be an East-West Senior Showcase at Wingate on Thursday, June 27. The graduated seniors will play a best two-out-of-three-game series. Bradley Hayes of East Wilkes will coach the West team.
The Region 7 team will be coached by Dwayne Berrier of North Wilkes. Glenn Craddock of Surry Central will be an assistant coach.
Watauga High baseball coach Pete Hardee will coach the Region 7 team in the N.C. Powerade State Baseball Tournament, June 19-23. The baseball tournament will be played at UNC-Charlotte and Hopewell High School.
Region 7 begins competition on Wednesday, June 20 against Region 4 at UNCC.
