An investigation into a church break-in has now led to charges of contributing to the delinquency of a child while looking into other crimes. The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office began the investigation looking into items stolen from Mt. Vernon Church located at 2190 Cranberry Creek Road. It was September 23rd of 2012 that deputies responded to the call with stolen items including a cooler & hand sanitizer.  The door was also damaged. As the investigation progressed, it was determined that the crime was committed by a juvenile—a juvenile dropped off at the church numerous times while drugs were bought at a residence nearby. In that, Randy Brian Shelton of 221 N, Jefferson & Kathy Ann Smith of NC 194 N, West Jefferson were charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of Juvenile. The Ashe Sheriff’s Office release did not indicate drug charges in the initial counts, but asked that anyone with additional information about this investigation is asked to call the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office at (336) 846-5633 or Ashe County Crime Stoppers at (336) 846-4188. Crime Stoppers pays cash for information leading to the arrest of individuals connected to certain crimes.
