After its third consecutive trip to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals, Appalachian State University men’s soccer looks to advance even

further, as head coach Matt Nelson announced his 2013 schedule, beginning in late August.
With the Mountaineers scheduled to play eight home games, including a rematch with a Wofford team that eliminated Nelson’s team from the postseason, Appalachian seeks its third consecutive winning season.
Beginning with three exhibitions, including two home matches with Lees-McRae and High Point, the regular season starts on Aug. 30 with the home opener against Marshall. The Thundering Herd commence a string of three-straight home matches to begin the season, as Navy (Sept. 1) and UNC Asheville (Sept. 6) visit the High Country for a trio of non-conference showdowns.
The Apps hit the road for the first time on Sept. 10 against Radford to rekindle a non-conference rivalry, as the teams have met 16 times with the Highlanders holding an 8-7-1 advantage over the Black and Gold.
Appalachian returns to the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex for a non-conference match with USC Upstate on Sept. 14, before hitting the road once again for the Lipscomb Invitational. After the two-day event, beginning on Sept. 20, the Apps will face the host, Lipscomb, and then close the tournament with a meeting against Belmont on Sept. 22. Both matches will be played at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tenn.
After their weekend stint in Nashville, the Mountaineers will have one final tune-up before beginning SoCon play, remaining in the Volunteer State. App State faces ETSU in a cross-boarder showdown on Sept. 26.
The Mountaineers begin their conference schedule and close out September with a home match with Furman on Sept. 29. A week later, the Apps travel to Elon to take on the defending tournament champions on Oct. 5.
The schedule continues with back-to-back home conference matches with UNCG (Sept. 12) and Wofford (Sept. 15), the two teams who have eliminated the Mountaineers out of the SoCon Tournament the past two seasons.
The last part of App State’s schedule is grueling with four-straight road contests, including a trip to ACC opponent, NC State. The road stint begins with a conference match at Georgia Southern on Oct. 29.
With five-straight SoCon matches under their belts, the Apps move back to their non-conference slate, as they head to Georgia State on Oct. 26 and then take on the Wolfpack on Oct. 29 in Raleigh.
The Mountaineers close out the 2013 regular season with their final SoCon match at Davidson on Nov. 2 and a non-conference match with Longwood for their final home match of the season on Nov. 5.
The SoCon Tournament is slated to begin on Nov. 9 with the quarterfinals beginning at the top four seeds’ campus sites. The semifinals and finals will begin on Nov. 15 with the championship set for Nov. 17 and will be played in Greenville, S.C. at Furman’s Stone Stadium.
