Southern Conference champion Elon learned its postseason fate Monday, with the Phoenix being sent to the Charlottesville (Va.) Regional of the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. Elon will take on UNCW on Friday at Davenport Field. No.6 national seed Virginia is hosting the regional and will face Army in the first round. Each regional field features four teams, playing in a double-elimination format. All 16 regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, May 31, to Monday, June 3, and all will be available on ESPN3.
Elon (33-28) has met UNCW (37-21), an at-large selection out of the Colonial Athletic Association, twice this season. The Seahawks took both meetings, winning 7-3 on March 12 in Wilmington, N.C., and 8-5 on April 10 in Elon, N.C. The Phoenix will be making its first NCAA appearance since 2010, when Elon earned at at-large bid.
Elon earned the SoCon’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a 6-5 win over The Citadel in the Southern Conference Baseball Championship on Sunday. The Phoenix, the third seed in the tournament, became just the second team in league history to lose its first game and go on to win the tournament, joining the 1991 Furman squad. Elon finished in a tie for second in the SoCon regular-season standings, turning in an 18-11 league record.
