A potent Hickory Crawdads lineup took it to another level Saturday night, as the 'Dads exploded for a season high 14 runs on 13 hits in their 14-3 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators in front of 3,783 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium. All nine Crawdads starters scored at least one run in the blowout, while seven of the nine had at least one hit and one RBI. Nick Williams, who was activated off the DL the day before, led the attack going 3-4 with a home run and four RBI. Jordan Akins also posted a 4-hit night, finishing 4-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. As a team, Hickory went 9-16 with runners in scoring position.
Kannapolis actually started the game scoring the first two runs, plating single tallies in both the first and third innings to go ahead 2-0. Hickory took over in the bottom of the third however, scoring three runs in both the third and fourth and six more runs in the fifth to take a 12-2 advantage and chase Intimidators starter Jefferson Olacio.
The third inning tallies came when Williams, Ryan Rua and Joey Gallo all picked up RBI singles to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead. The 'Dads 4th inning runs came from a Lewis Brinson RBI groundout, followed by Williams' 2-run bomb over the right field advertisement wall. A 2-RBI single by Akins highlighted the big 6-run 5th, while Williams plated his fourth run with another RBI base hit.
Kannapolis would pick up their final run in the top of the sixth, before the 'Dads capped off their big night with two more runs in the bottom of the frame. Joe Maloney drove in the first run with an RBI double while Luis Marte picked up an RBI on a fly out to right to end the scoring at 14-3.
The benefactor of all the offensive support was Crawdads starting pitcher Connor Sadzeck (4-2) who held Kannapolis to two runs on three hits, three walks and four strikeouts over his five innings pitched. Olacio (1-7) took the loss for Kannapolis after giving up 12 runs, 11 earned, on 10 hits, five walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.
The win is the sixth in seven games for the Crawdads (27-20), who have now won two of their first three games against the Intimidators (16-29). The 'Dads will go for the series win Sunday night, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 pm.
