Kiana Millsaps can officially take her place among the great pitchers the Alexander Central High softball team has produced over the years. Millsaps took a giant step in that direction by guiding

the Cougars (30-1) to a 10-0, five-inning victory over Southeast Guilford (25-3) in game one of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A Western Regional Finals.
Millsaps went the distance, gave up one hit, walked one and struck out three. She also helped her own cause by belting her first career grand slam in a seven-run fifth inning. That blast broke the game open.
Taylor Wike of the Cougars was 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI; Vada Sherrill was 2-3 with two runs scored; Amanda Sports homered and drove in two runs. The Cougars made nine hits. Game two of this best of three series will be played at Southeast Guilford tonight at 7p.m. Game three, if necessary, will be played in Taylorsville Saturday night.

RED TORNADOES-WEDDINGTON PPD

Game one of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A Western Regional Finals between the Hickory High baseball team and Weddington was postponed Thursday night because of graduation ceremonies at Hickory.
The Red Tornadoes (17-10), riding a four-game winning streak, will play Weddington at Washam Field tonight at 7 p.m. Game two will be played at Weddington Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.; a third game, if necessary, will be played Monday at Hickory.
Hickory is in the state semifinals for the second time in the best-of-3 format, having lost two games to one in 2005 to Northwest Cabarrus. The winner of this series will play either Greenville Conley (25-2, No. 1 seed from the Coastal 3A) or Hillsborough Orange (25-2, No. 1 seed from the Carolina 3A) in the state finals late next week. The state finals, a best of three series, will be played in the Raleigh area.
