BAKER TOSSES ANOTHER NO-HITTER
The St. Stephens High softball team marched its way into the sectional finals by knocking off Patton 5-1 in a second-round game in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs. And Katie Baker, like she has all year, backboned her team in that win.
Baker, who tossed a no-hitter against West Henderson last Friday in the first round, followed that up with her second consecutive no-hitter Tuesday night. Baker allowed three walks and the only run that scored was unearned. But she also struck out 13 batters as the Indians (16-7) marched their way into the sectional finals Friday night at Enka (17-4), the No.1 seed from the Mountain Athletic 3A/4A Conference. Enka advanced by nipping Crest 3-2 Tuesday night.
Fred T. Foard advanced to the sectional finals by shutting out R.S. Central 3-0 in a second-round game Tuesday night. Lexi Schubert, who threw a perfect game against Forestview Friday night, threw a one-hitter on Tuesday. She walked one and struck out 17 batters. The Tigers (22-4), the No.1 seed among the Class 3A schools and the No.2 seed overall in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, will play Franklin (15-5) in the sectional championship game Friday night.
Franklin, the No.1 seed from the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference, defeated South Point 7-6 in extra innings.
In Class 4A, Alexander Central (27-1) advanced to the sectional finals by blanking McDowell 6-0 Tuesday night in Taylorsville. Winning pitcher Kiana Millsaps tossed a no-hitter. She struck out four and only allowed one base runner, who reached on error, spoiling her bid for a perfect game. The Cougars, the regular-season and tournament champions in the NW3A/4A, will play Lake Norman in the sectional championship game Friday night.
Lake Norman (20-2), the No.1 seed from the I-Meck 4A Conference, defeated Sun Valley 5-1 Tuesday night. Charlotte-Olympic elminiated South Caldwell 5-2 in a second-round game in Charlotte. The Spartans end their season with a 15-8 record.
