Watauga High sophomore Austin Northern has been named to the Northwestern 3A/4A All-Conference team in boy's golf. Northern, who is also a quarterback on the WHS football team, paced the Pioneers
to a third-place finish in the NW3A/4A this season.
"I'm willing to work at anything I can do to help my team win," Northern said. "I'm not a 'me' person. I love playing football, but by the end of the season, I'm ready to play golf. It's a weird combination. But having my dad (Mike) as a coach is a blessing. He's the kind of guy that supports me in anything I do, and he's always been there for me."
Hickory, which won the conference championship, led the way with five players on the all-conference team. Austin Harrill, who finished in 16th place at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state championships at Foxfire Village, N.C., on Tuesday, Frankie Wyatt, Roland Morris, Peter Harrill, and James Setzer of the Red Tornadoes were named to the All-NW3A/4A squad.
Hibriten, which finished in second place, had three players named to the all-conference team, Noah Martin, Tyler Johnson and Colton Tucker. South Caldwell, the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools had two players chosen to the all-conference team, Blake Childers and Cole Parlier.
Childers, who represented the Spartans at the Class 4A state meet, finished 60th at state with a two-day total of 165. He had rounds of 82 and 83. Austin Harrill of the Red Tornadoes was named the NW3A/4A Player of the Year. Ben Hale of Hickory was named the Coach of the Year.
