The Anderson Softball Team (40-13) advanced to the NCAA Division II Super Regionals after downing Lenoir-Rhyne (37-16), 6-3, in the 2013 Southeast Regional Championship Sunday afternoon at Bears Field. The Trojans, the sixth seed, won all three games in the regional tournament in their first-ever NCAA postseason appearance. Lenoir-Rhyne, the 12th-ranked squad in the nation, was the second seed in the tournament and had to win twice on Saturday just to advance to the regional finals.
Anderson's Molly Child (LaGrange, Ga.) and Danielle Swygert (Sharpsburg, Ga.) each drove in two runs as the Trojans rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take the victory. Child's two-run single tied the game at three in the bottom of the third before Swygert came through with the game-winning hit, a two-run double, in the fourth frame.
The Trojans' Jessica Neidigh (Lawrenceville, Ga.) also scored three times and Laura Jansky (Kennesaw, Ga.) hit a solo home run while Bailey Smith (Shelby, N.C.) (18-7) earned the win in relief for Anderson.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored all three of its runs in the top of the third inning highlighted by run-scoring hits from junior outfielder Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) and senior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.).
Freshman Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) (17-8) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bears, who lost for just the second time in 15 all-time tries against the Trojans.
The NCAA Division II Southeast Super Regionals is a best two-of-three series next weekend starting on Friday with the winner advancing to the 2013 D-II Women's College World Series in Salem, Va., on May 23-27 at the Moyer Complex.
