The Watauga High boy's golf team turned in its best season in five years. The Pioneers, who fell 13 shots shy of the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, also produced

four regional qualifiers (Austin Northern, Carson Nguyen, Austin Graham and Troy McNeil) along the way.
But despite its first regional appearance since 2008, WHS saw its season come to an end on a rainy day at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A Western Regional at the North Shore Country Club in Huntersville, N.C. Northern paced WHS with a ten-over-par 82 on the par 72 course. He fell eight shots behind Blake Childers of South Caldwell, who qualified for state with a two-over-par 74.
Nguyen fell nine shots short with an 11-over-par 83. McNeil fired an 89; Graham had a 90. Will Rainey of South Mecklenburg was the leading medalist. He fired a two-under-par 70 and survived a playoff against three other golfers Monday to win the individual title. Myers Park won the team title with a three-under-par 285.
The Class 3A Western Regional at the Cedar Rock Country Club in Lenior, N.C., was rained out. It will be played on Thursday.
