Winning Streak Ends on Walk-Off PDF Print

The Greensboro Grasshoppers took a page out of the Hickory Crawdads playbook Tuesday night, rallying from a 6-run deficit and winning 10-8 on a walk-off home run to end the 'Dads 7-game winning streak.
Hickory's weeklong rampage included several come-from-behind victories and a few walk-offs as well, but in their first game in Greensboro it was the 'Dads who jumped out to an early lead only to see it slip away.
The Crawdads entered the third inning trailing the Grasshoppers 1-0 before exploding for seven runs on five hits to take a commanding 7-1 advantage. Jorge Alfaro got things started with a 2-run homer to left while Joey Gallo capped the frame with a grand slam blast to right. The moon shot by Gallo was his first granny of the year and his seventh overall homer, tying him with teammate Nick Williams for the South Atlantic League lead.
The offense would suddenly dry up after the third inning outburst however, and the Grasshoppers began to pick away at the lead against the 'Dads bullpen. Greensboro scored once in the fourth, once in the fifth and three more times in the sixth off new reliever Ryan Bores to knock Hickory's advantage down to 7-6.
Adding insult to injury, 'Dads first baseman Joe Maloney was ejected after arguing a called third strike with home plate umpire Brian Peterson in the top of the 6th.
The Crawdads would pick up what looked like an insurance run when Alfaro launched a solo homer to left for his second blast of the night. The 8-6 lead wouldn't last the inning however, as bullpen arm Jose Leclerc allowed three straight 2-out hits to tie the game at 8-8.
Following an uneventful top of the 9th, Greensboro completed their comeback in dramatic fashion with a game-winning 2-run bomb over the right field foul pole by Viosergy Rosa to give the Grasshoppers their 10-8 win.
Alfaro ended the night 2-4 with 2 HR, and 3 RBI, joining Gallo, Williams, Maloney and Ryan Rua as Crawdads with multi-homer games this year. Gallo finished the game 2-4 with a HR, 2B and 4 RBI.
Hickory reliever Josh McElwee (2-1) took the loss after allowing the walk-off home run in the 9th, while Greensboro hurler Frank Reed (1-0) picked up the win for his perfect top of the inning.
The loss snaps Hickory's (11-8) 7-game winning streak and drops them to just 1-4 against Greensboro (11-8) this season. The 'Dads will try to exact some revenge and start a new streak Wednesday night in game two of the 3-game series at 7:00 pm.
NOTES: The Crawdads 7-game road trip continues with two more games in Greensboro followed by four contests in Hagerstown.
