The Watauga High girl's soccer team nailed down the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Thursday night by knocking off South Caldwell 3-1 at Jack Groce
Stadium. Hannah Younger, who has been a scoring machine of late, tallied twice in the win.
The WHS senior has six goals this week. The Pioneers (6-4-3 overall; 4-2-1 NW3A/4A) led 2-1 at halftime. Younger's goal in the second half put the contest out of reach. Kat Welsch had a goal and an assist; Lillie Brady had an assist.
Mackenzie Nelson got the start in goal and made four saves; Kursten Stang finished up by playing the final 14 minutes and had a save. The Pioneers take on Hibriten at home next Tuesday night.
WHS won the JV game, 3-1. Megan Gottfried scored twice; Olivia Grimm scored a goal; Olivia Waters and Gracie Kleeberger each had an assist. Brooklin Carroll was in goal and made six saves.
WHS Tennis Wins Fourth Straight
The Watauga High boy's tennis team knocked off St. Stephens 5-4 Thursday night in its regular-season finale. It was also WHS' (7-5 overall; 5-1 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) fourth win in a row.
The Pioneers finish league play as the No.2 seed overall, but as the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the conference. Will Spinetto and Noah Moomaw made it all possible with a huge win at No.3 doubles.
That duo, which has been stellar this season, defeated Zach Eddins and Garrett Bolter of the Indians 10-5 to snap a 4-4 tie and secure the match. Landon Taylor and Harrison Battle teamed up for a win at No.1 doubles to give WHS a 4-3 lead. But the Indians tied the match with a win at No.2 doubles.
Dristen Trate at No.3 singles, Caleb Gould at No.4 and Josh Lampkins at No.6, rallied WHS from an early 2-0 deficit.
The Pioneers will compete in the NW3A/4A Conference qualifer on Monday. The Wilkes Central match that was rained out on March 25, and was to be played today, has been rained out and will not be rescheduled.

WHS Golf Finishes Fourth At Catawba
The Watuaga High boy's golf team turned in a fifth-place finish on Thursday at the Catawba Country Club in Hickory, N.C. The Pioneers, despite their fifth-place finish, remain the No.2 seed among the Class 4A schools in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference.
The Pioneers had a team score of 317. Hickory bested the field with a 295, edging second-place South Caldwell (298) by three strokes to win the NW3A/4A match. Fred T. Foard, the host school, was sixth with a 342.
Carson Nguyen, Troy McNeil and Austin Northern paced the Pioneers as they each fired a seven-over par 79 on the par 72 course. Brady Childers of South Caldwell paced the field with a two-under par 70.
The Pioneers will host a NW3A/4A match next Tuesday at the Boone Golf Club.
