After tossing his second-consecutive complete-game shutout on Saturday versus Georgia Southern, Appalachian State University baseball’s Sam Agnew-Wieland (Marietta, Ga./Wheeler) has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row, the league office announced on Monday. On the heels of his five-hit shutout versus Wofford on March 30, Agnew-Wieland limited Georgia Southern to just two hits and struck out nine in Saturday’s 2-0 triumph. The right-handed junior did not surrender a hit to 19-straight batters between a single to left field in the first inning and an infield hit in the seventh and retired 14 in a row between his only walks of the afternoon in the second and sixth innings.
With the back-to-back shutouts, Agnew-Wieland has registered 19-consecutive scoreless innings, dating back to March 23 at College of Charleston. He has surrendered just seven hits (all singles, only two of which have left the infield) and struck out 21 during his 19-straight shutout innings.
Agnew-Wieland (5-2, 3.73 ERA, 52 strikeouts) is the SoCon’s first back-to-back Pitcher of the Week since Elon’s Steven Hensley earned the recognition on April 3 and 10, 2006 and the first Mountaineer to accomplish the feat since the inception of the award in 1989.
Winners of seven of their last 10 ballgames, Agnew-Wieland and the Mountaineers (17-10, 8-6 SoCon) hit the road for their next nine contests, beginning with Tuesday’s non-conference tilt at UNC Asheville. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at historic McCormick Field in Asheville, N.C.
