Senior Yue Xu and sophomore Haley Zagoria finished second and third, respectively, as Appalachian State University women’s golf captured the team championship at the final round of the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon at Mimosa Hills Country Club.
Xu finished the second round with a 3-over 75 to give her a tournament total of 148 (+4), two shots behind medalist Meagan Wallace of Winthrop. Zagoria was a stoke behind the senior, matching Xu’s 75 to sit alone in third-place, her best finish for a tournament this season.
The duo paced the Mountaineers en route to a second-round total of 304 (+16) to give them a combined total of 610 (+34) for the two-day event. The 610 was ten shots better than runner-up, Winthrop.
Senior Lauren Smith claimed a top-5 position, finishing in fifth-place for her final tournament at Mimosa Hills. Smith carded a final round 73 (+1) for a combined total of 150 (+6). Senior Rumbidzai Masamvu turned in matching 81s for the tournament, giving her a 163 (+19), tying her for 33rd place, as freshman Lily Yatawara rounded out the Mountaineer lineup with a 169 (+25) and tying for 51st place.
Senior Mimi Burke, who played as an individual for the tournament, tied for 38th shooting a 164 (+20). The Apps now shift their focus to the Southern Conference Championships on April 14-16 at Moss Creek Plantation in Hilton Head, S.C. Appalachian looks to improve on a fifth-place finish from last season’s conference championship.
