The Watauga High girl's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie on the road in Marion, N.C., Wednesday night in a non-conference game against McDowell. Hali
Wood-Miller scored WHS' (3-3-3) only goal at the 25 minute mark of the first half. Cole Ellis picked up the assist. But the Pioneers allowed a late goal as McDowell tied it up with a goal at the 75-minute mark of the second half.
The Pioneers controlled the game for the most part, and goalkeeper Heather Ostwalt made six saves. The teams did not go into overtime because it was not a conference game. The Pioneers return to Northwestern 3A/4A Conference play when they travel to Hickory right after the Easter break on Tuesday, April 9.
The Fred T. Foard match that was scheduled for today has been postponed and will be made up on Wednesday, April 17.
WHS TENNIS FALLS TO NEWTON-CONOVER
Watauga High boy's tennis coach Scott Taylor has seen better days. On Tuesday, the Pioneers (3-4) lost their first conference match during his tenure. On Wednesday, things got a little tougher asd WHS fell a game under .500 with a 6-3 setback at Newton-Conover.
"We're just young, and we have to work through this," said junior Landon Taylor, who will be a guest on the Dugout Show for Monday's WHS baseball broadcast from Forest City, N.C. "We got some good young players, but a lot of these guys are freshmen. The weather hasn't done us any favors. Harrison (Battle) and I are the older guys on this team, and our program has had a great tradition. We just have to help these younger guys coming up."
Brody O'Neal at No.5 singles, and Josh Lampkins at No.6, picked up wins for WHS on Wednesday. O'Neal disposed of Dan Avis, 6-0, 6-3; Lampkins knocked off Chandler Roffey in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 in the tie breaker.
Leading 4-2, the Red Devils put the match away with wins at No.1 and No.2 doubles. Noah Moomaw and Will Spinetto halted the Red Devils' momentum with a win at No.3 doubles. Moomaw and Spinetto knocked off Avis and Gordon Wepner, 10-2. Ryan Schlecht and Andrew Skeens of the Pioneers defeated Geoffery Carlson and David Domingez, 8-2, in their exhibition match.
The Pioneers travel to Mooresville on April 8.
