The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (21-6) swept a doubleheader from Francis Marion (19-13), 1-0 and 8-0, Wednesday afternoon on the road. The Patriots came into the contest ranked No. 22 in NCAA Division II.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 1, Francis Marion 0
L-R freshman Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) improved to 11-4 on the season after throwing a three-hit shutout. Hole also struck out four batters for her second shutout of the year.
The Bears scored the lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by freshman catcher Lauren Elder (Taylorsville, N.C.).
Francis Marion's Taylor Luff (Bonneau, S.C.) fell to 10-8 on the year despite going the distance and allowing just one unearned run with nine strikeouts.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 8, Francis Marion 0 (six innings)
Lenoir-Rhyne broke the game open with a six-run third inning highlighted by a three-run home run from junior outfielder Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.). In addition, freshman Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) (9-2) threw her sixth shutout of the year for the Bears. Hoskins allowed two hits with four strikeouts while Francis Marion's Danielle Payne (Clarks Hill, S.C.) (4-4) took the loss.
L-R freshman shortstop Chelsey Long (Nakina, N.C.) and senior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) also drove in two runs each for the Bears in the doubleheader sweep.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Carson-Newman in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Francis Marion, meanwhile, remains at home to face North Georgia in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., as well.
