The Wingate Baseball Team (15-12) jumped ahead early and held on for a 17-11 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (9-17) Wednesday evening in a non-conference game at Bears Field.

Wingate's Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) and Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) each hit a home run in the first inning to lead the Bulldogs to the win. Spitz totaled four hits and four runs batted in while Matthew Barrier (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) drove in three runs as well as the Bulldogs finished the contest with 22 hits.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior second baseman Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) and sophomore designated hitter Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) both drove in a pair of runs but the Bears saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.
Holding a 4-2 advantage after three innings of play, Wingate broke the game open with five runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.
The Bears tried to make a last-ditch effort and scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Wingate's Steven Chaffee (Greenville, S.C.) (1-0) earned his first win of the year while Lenoir-Rhyne senior Ryan Reedy (Clearwater, Fla.) fell to 0-1 after suffering the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday evening against Catawba, ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division II, in Salisbury, N.C., beginning at 6:00 p.m. Wingate hosts first-place Carson-Newman in a league showdown on Friday night at well. First pitch between the Eagles and Bulldogs is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
