The Carson-Newman Baseball Team (10-7, 6-1) won a pitchers' duel over Lenoir-Rhyne (5-14, 1-6), 2-1, Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex in a South Atlantic Conference weekend series opener. Carson-Newman's Chris Armstrong

(Blaine, Tenn.) (3-2) allowed just one run over eight innings of work while striking out 12 batters in the victory.
L-R junior Eric Ryan (Baltimore, Md.) suffered the loss and fell to 0-3 on the year despite going the distance. Ryan allowed just one earned run to go along with seven strikeouts.
The Eagles scored first in the bottom of the second inning when Cody Fox's (Seymour, Tenn.) sacrifice fly scored Evan Jurjevic (New Carlisle, Ind.). The game remained 1-0 until the eighth inning when L-R freshman catcher David Martin (Boone, N.C.) also scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Landon Elks (Shelby, N.C.). Martin was 1-3 on the day.
However, Carson-Newman's Brad Ausmus (Jefferson City, Tenn.) drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the Eagles' half of the eighth.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which lost its fifth straight game, finished with just three hits on the afternoon but only allowed six hits to Carson-Newman. The Eagles' Dustin Dunagan (Winder, Ga.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save of the year. The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., in Jefferson City, Tenn. Both contests are scheduled to go seven innings.
