The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (5-10, 1-3) opened a South Atlantic Conference weekend series with a 6-3 loss to Wingate (7-7, 2-2) Saturday evening at Ron Christopher Stadium.

The Bulldogs' Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead Wingate to the victory. Clark's grand slam extended the Bulldogs' advantage to 6-0 before the Bears finally got on the board with a pair of runs in their half of the sixth. Junior designated hitter Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) and freshman catcher David Martin (Boone, N.C.) drove in runs in the frame to cut the margin to 6-2. Martin was 0-3 on the day with that RBI.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior first baseman Colton Hansley (Asheville, N.C.) rounded out the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh inning. The round-tripper was Hansley's first of the season. Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) led the Bulldogs offensively with three hits and a run scored while Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) (1-1) earned the win on the mound.  Currie allowed just three runs over seven innings of work to go along with five strikeouts while Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) pitched two scoreless innings for his first save of the year for Wingate.
Hansley tallied a pair of hits while junior Eric Ryan (Baltimore, Md.) suffered the loss for Lenoir-Rhyne and fell to 0-2 on the season. The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m., in Wingate, N.C. Both contests are slated to go seven innings.
