The Northwestern 3A/4A Conference tournament pairings have been released. The Watauga High boy's and girls team's will host first-round games Monday night at Lentz-Eggers Gym. The WHS girls (10-12 overall; 5-7 Northwestern 3A/4A
Conference), the No.4 seed, will host Hibriten (8-15; 4-8), the No.5 seed.
The teams split their two regular-season games with each team winning at home. The Panthers, thanks to a last-second shot by Keisha Corpening, defeated WHS 41-39 in Lenior, N.C., on January 23. The Pioneers returned the favor as they blasted Hibriten 58-23 on Senior Night last Tuesday at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Corpening did not play in that game (ankle injury).
Like the girls, the WHS boys (12-9; 6-6) are a No.4 seed. The Pioneers will host South Caldwell (8-13; 6-6), the No.5 seed. The Pioneers swept the season series against the Spartans. WHS won in Sawmills, N.C., 61-56. And WHS defeated South Caldwell 70-66 in overtime at Lentz-Eggers Gym last Friday night. The Pioneers wiped out a five-point deficit with 13 seconds left. Jay Harrill caught fire and scored 15 of his team-high 18 points in the final 4:13 of that game.
He scored five of those points in the last 13 seconds of regulation time on a three ball, and a steal of the inbounds pass moments later. He threw up the shot while falling backwards and it went in at the horn.
The girls game begins at 6:30 p.m.; the boys game begins at 8 p.m. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. on Oldies 100.7 FM.
In other games Monday night, the Hickory (19-5; 9-3) boys, who lost the regular-season title at Fred T. Foard Friday night, are the No.2 seed. The Red Tornadoes will host the No.7 seed, Alexander Central (8-16; 1-11). The Cougars avoided a winless conference season by beating Hibriten 50-38 Friday night.
The other match up finds, St. Stephens (18-6; 9-3), the No.3 seed, hosting Hibriten (8-15; 1-11), the No.6 seed. The Panthers have lost six in a row.
The boys semifinals will be played Tuesday night at Craft Gymnasium in Hickory. The winner of WHS-South Caldwell plays the top seed, Fred T. Foard (20-4; 10-2), which received a first-round bye, in the first semifinal game at 6:30 p.m., that night. The Hickory-Alexander Central winner takes on the St. Stephens-Hibriten winner in game two beginning at 8 p.m. The championship game will be played Friday night at 8 p.m. The Hickory boys won the title last year. The defeated Alexander Central in the finals.
Hickory is the No.1 seed in the girls bracket and will receive a first-round bye. St. Stephens, the No.7 seed, travels to Fred T. Foard, the No.2 seed Monday night; South Caldwell, the No.6 seed, travels to Alexander Central, the No.3 seed on Monday.
The WHS-Hibriten winner takes on the Hickory in the first semifinal game Wednesday night beginning at 6:30 p.m.; the second semifinal game, which begins at 8 p.m., features the Fred T. Foard-St. Stephens winner taking on the Alexander Central-South Caldwell winner. The girls championship will be played Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Hickory defeated South Caldwell in the finals last season. The Pioneers reached the conference championship (a first in school history) in 2010-11. The Pioneers lost to Hickory in the finals that season.
NOTES: Clay Byrd of East Burke is the only regional player selected to play in the 2013 Carolinas Classic. The game will be played in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on March 23. The East Burke boys were regular-season champions in the Catawba Valley 2A Conference. The games will begin at 6:30 P.M. The games will match some of the best senior players from North Carolina against their South Carolina counterparts.
