Hickory High girls basketball coach Barbara Helms picked up her 300th career win Tuesday night when the Red Tornadoes defeated St. Stephens 72-42 at Craft Gymnasium. Helms is 300-74 in her career; 262-27 at Hickory....West Caldwell boys

coach Danny Anderson is aiming his sights on career win No.600 Friday night when the Warriors (17-4 overall; 11-2 Catawba Valley 2A Conference) travel to Newton-Conover. The Warriors and the Red Devils are tied for second in the CVAC; East Burke (12-1) is the No.1 seed. Anderson, now in his 30th year, has won 448 games during his 20-year stay at West Caldwell and 599 games overall in his career. Anderson took a year off last season before he returned this season.....Last night in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, the South Caldwell girls (7-14) knocked off Wilkes Central 56-43 Tuesday night in Sawmills, N.C., in their regular-season finale. Courtney Wood paced South Caldwell with 24 points; Caleigh Raby poured in 20 points. The South Caldwell girls (3-9 in conference play) will be the No.6 seed in the NW3A/4A Conference tournament, which begins next Monday, February 18.....Wilkes Central beat the South Caldwell boys, 63-44. The Spartans (8-12; 6-6) will play at Watauga in the opening round of the conference tournament next Monday night.
