The Newberry Women's Basketball Team (15-5, 7-3) moved into a second-place tie in the South Atlantic Conference standings with Lenoir-Rhyne (12-6, 7-3) after defeating the Bears by a 70-59 score Saturday afternoon at Shuford
Memorial Gymnasium. The Wolves' Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Victoria, AUSTRALIA) led all scorers with 19 points and added nine rebounds as Newberry outscored L-R by a 41-24 margin after halftime en route to the win.
L-R sophomore guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) finished with a team-high 17 points but Lenoir-Rhyne fell into a second-place tie with Newberry after the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne held a 35-29 advantage entering intermission but Newberry went on the offensive in the second half and used a 16-4 run late in the game to take control.
A free throw by Kendra Brown (Swansea, S.C.) gave the Wolves a 61-52 advantage with 4:25 remaining in the contest and the Bears couldn't get within six points the rest of the way.
Brown and Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA), the conference's leading scorer, each finished with 15 points as well for Newberry, who limited L-R to just 33 percent shooting (23-of-70) for the contest.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior guard Krystal Patton (Chilhowie, Va.) added 11 points off the bench but the Bears connected on just two-of-14 three-point attempts in suffering their second straight loss.
In the next round of South Atlantic Conference contests on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m.., Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Wingate while Newberry returns home to take on Anderson.
