The Watauga High boys and girls swimming teams, despite a limited roster, competed at a four-team meet at Lenior-Rhyne University Wednesday night. The WHS girls were 3-1 in their dual meets and

won two events. WHS defeated North Lincoln 39-36, Bandys 63-12, Alexander Central 57-20, and lost to St. Stephens 61-31. Anne Taylor won the 50 free style in 26.98, and Carson Middlebrook won the 100 breast stroke in 1:14.91.
The boys, who only had five swimmers in the field, gave it their best shot, but weren't as fortunate. They lost to Bandys 35-34, North Lincoln 750-15, St. Stephens 61-25, and Alexander Central 46-33. Marcus Funston posted two third place finishes in the 50 free style (24.70) and the 100 butterfly (59.73); Ben Watson finished third in the 500 free style (6:35.62) and WHS finished third in the 200 free style relay (Funston, Chris Winkler, Watson and Ben Michelsen in 1:48.03).
"We swam with a limited roster due to sickness, exams, and to attend Leigh Cooper Wallace's service," said WHS coach David Gragg. "All were understandable absences, but missing that many swimmers really put us at a disadvantage. Anne Taylor swam well in the 50 Free and 200 IM. Eliza Enterline and Riley Dobbins swam well in the 500 free.  Neither of those girls had swam the event before. We were shorthanded  I only had five guys competing for the boys team, so it was not really a good indication of what we can do. But I was pleased they all swam well considering all the outside events that were happening. We will have to buckle down over the next two weeks of training and then get ready for meets in January.  Conference is a little over a month away."
The Pioneers will take time off for the Christmas holidays. WHS travels to Lenior for a dual meet with Hibriten on January 9.
