Watauga High Athletics Director Tom Wright has announced that the Pioneers scheduled basketball games with Fred T. Foard on Tuesday and West Caldwell on Thursday have been postponed. The games will be rescheduled at a later date to

be announced. The games were postponed following the sudden passing of teacher and coach Leigh Cooper Wallace on Monday morning.
Wallace had been hospitalized and was suffering from septic shock, when she passed away early Monday morningĀ  at Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee. Wallace, who was 43-years-old, was airlifted to the Tennessee hospital over the weekend as her breathing became difficult.
She is survived by her husband, Chris Wallace, and two children, Jake and Haleigh. Wallace graduated from Appalachian State University, where she ran cross-country and track. She coached track and cross country at Watauga High, and led the girls lacrosse team to a district title in 2010. She was inducted into the now defunct Watauga County sports Hall of Fame in 2005.

The WHS boys and girls basketball teams travel to Sparta, N.C., for the Alleghany Christmas Tournament on Thursday and Friday, December 27-28. The WHS girls play North Surry on December 27 at 12 noon; the boys play North Surry at 1:30 p.m. Coverage begins at 11:30 a.m., and those games will air on AM 1450, WATA.
