Bobcats Cap 2012 With a Bang PDF Print

Senior Candace Flowers (Charlotte, N.C.) poured in a game-high 18 points off the bench, and the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team outscored

Virginia Intermont College by a 36-16 margin in the second half en route to a 69-42 victory in non-conference play on Tuesday evening in Williams Gymnasium.
Lees-McRae (2-5) shot 41.7 percent from the floor on the night, including a 48.3 percent clip in the second half, while holding Virginia Intermont (6-8) to a field goal percentage of 29.1 percent in the contest. The Bobcats won the battle on the glass by a 41-31 margin, including a 27-17 advantage on the defensive boards, while posting a season-high 10 blocks and knocking down 10-of-20 attempts from beyond the arc.
Flowers paced the Bobcats with a game- and season-high 18 points with a 6-for-11 night from the floor, while knocking down 5-of-8 attempts from downtown. Lauren Lewis (Concord, N.C.) added 14 points with a 5-for-10 night from the field and a 4-for-8 clip from three-point range, recording five rebounds and two steals.
Alyssa Munson (Summerfield, N.C.) chipped in seven rebounds and a game-high four blocks, as Tayler Collins (Fayetteville, N.C.) equaled Munson's contest-best four stuffs to go along with six points. Layana de Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) posted a game-high seven assists, while Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) added eight points and five helpers. Kabrina Truesdale (Wilmington, N.C.) also chipped in seven boards and four assists in the contest.
Kayla Orrick led the way for Virginia Intermont with 15 points, connecting on 6-of-14 attempts from the field while recording a game-high four steals. Rainey Story added seven points and a game-high nine boards.
The Bobcats opened the first half with a 4-0 spurt before Virginia Intermont responded with an 8-0 run, taking an 8-4 lead on a pair of Adrianne Evans free throws with 14:59 to go in the period. Lees-McRae would answer with an 8-2 spurt, claiming a 12-10 advantage following a layup by Truesdale at the 11:28 mark.
The Cobras countered once again with a 7-2 spurt, snatching a 17-14 lead on a Johnee Lewis lay-in before Lewis answered with a clutch three-pointer, kick-starting a 14-3 surge that gave the Bobcats a 28-20 advantage with 4:28 to play in the half. After Virginia Intermont answered with back-to-back buckets to trim the margin to 28-24, the Bobcats closed out the half with a 5-0 spurt to take a 33-26 advantage into the intermission following a Lewis triple with 1:08 left on the clock.
The Bobcats carried the momentum into the second half, opening the period with a 20-4 surge to push the lead to 53-30 on a Truesdale layup with 11:09 to play. The Bobcats would hold on from there, outscoring the Cobras by a 16-12 margin over the final 10 minutes to close out the 69-42 win with a late bucket by Collins.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday, January 5, 2013 when the Bobcats host Mount Olive College to resume their Conference Carolinas schedule at 2 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
