Ashe Rescue Responds to Fatal Alleghany Crash PDF Print

Ashe Rescue units had to travel into Alleghany County last night after a horrific crash on NC 18 south of Sparta that has claimed one life, and injured 9.  The 7:20pm crash was reported to involve a 15-passenger van carrying 10 from a day of working in a Christmas tree farm in Alleghany was heading back to Jefferson where the workers lived, Trooper Aldridge saying that the van ran off the highway to the right in a left-hand curve, struck a ditch and overturned. The impact pinned several in the wreckage, ejected one, with five flown to wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, four rushed by ambulance to Alleghany Memorial, with one pronounced dead at the scene. Trooper Aldridge said that three of the injured were released at Alleghany Memorial, one admitted, and the five flown to Baptist were admitted.  N.C. Highway Patrol officials said that the accident happened on N.C. 18 in an area known as Jane Taylor Mountain, and the landing zone was set up near the scene. Ashe Rescue remained on standby for other Alleghany medical calls as all their med units were tied up for hours on the wreck.
