Spartans, Red Tornadoes Eliminated From State Playoffs PDF Print
Written by Staff Reports

It was a tough night for the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Friday night as its last two remaining teams, South Caldwell High and Hickory, were both eliminated in the second-round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state

playoffs. Monroe-Sun Valley, from the Southern Carolina 3A/4A Conference, outscored South Caldwell 56-35 in Sawmills Friday night in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. Sophomore running back Albert Funderburk led Sun Valley with 191 yards, 234 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns in the win. Sun Valley (9-3) will now play Porter Ridge in the third round next Friday night.
Porter Ridge, which knocked Watauga out of the state playoffs last week, advanced by knocking off A.C. Reynolds 16-6 Friday night in Indian Trail. Sun Valley quarterback Kevin Saxton threw for 357 yards and four touchdowns in the win; running back Zac Pollard of the Spartans (12-1) ran for 323 yards and four touchdowns rushing in the first half, but was held to just 42 yards and no TDs in the second half. South Caldwell also committed 15 penalties for 126 yards.
The news wasn't much better for Hickory. The Red Tornadoes (8-5) turned it over three times, including two fumbles at the goal-line, in a 28-13 setback at Lawndale-Burns Friday night in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. They also had two field goal attempts blocked in the loss. The Bulldogs (10-3) will play Freedom next Friday night in a third-round game. The Patriots (11-2) advanced by beating East Henderson 46-38 Friday night.
Quarterback Matt Williams hooked up with Daniel Davis on a 41-yard scoring pass, and he also scored a TD in the loss.
