The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team (19-9, 11-6) won a five-set thriller over Mars Hill (13-14, 6-11), 3-2, Friday evening in South Atlantic Conference action at Stanford Arena. L-R prevailed over Mars Hill by scores of 19-25, 31-29, 25-18, 21-25
and 15-12 en route to its third straight win. Lenoir-Rhyne freshman outside hitter Ashley Wells (Lovingston, Va.) finished with a career-high 24 kills while senior setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) totaled 56 assists and 18 digs as the Bears swept the season series from the Lions.
Sophomore outside hitter Haley Rhyne (Statesville, N.C.) and junior middle blocker Kayla Morrow (China Grove, N.C.) also finished in double figures in kills with 13 and 10, respectively, while freshman outside hitter Morgan Bunker (Mount Airy, N.C.) added a team-high 23 digs as well for the Bears.
Regan Macomson (Hendersonville, N.C.) led all players with 28 kills while Toni Cole (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished with 21 kills despite the loss for Mars Hill. The Lions' Becca Smith (Candler, N.C.) also tallied a double-double - a match-high 62 assists and 12 digs - in the losing effort.
Lenoir-Rhyne next travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to take on Tusculum while Mars Hill remains at home to face Brevard. Both South Atlantic Conference matches are the final ones of the regular season and both will start at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday afternoon.
Both team have also qualified for the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament, which begins next Friday in Brevard, N.C., at Boshamer Gymnasium.
