The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team placed a league-high eight players on the 2012 All-South Atlantic Conference First and Second Teams as
league awards were announced today. In addition, first-year mentor Cally Morrill was named the SAC Coach Of The Year while forward Leah Mullins was tabbed the league freshman of the year. Mullins was one of six players to be named to the All-South Atlantic Conference First Team.
Joining Mullins on the first team were sophomore midfielder Hanna Kiebel (Parker, Colo.), senior midfielder Carley Griffin (Fresno, Calif.), freshman defenders Brianna Belsky (Egg Harbour Township, N.J.) and Amber Madriaga (Wailuku, Hawaii) and senior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.).
Mullins leads the team in goals scored (11) and total points (25) while Griffin earned All-SAC First-Team honors for the second straight year.
Kiebel, last year's league freshman of the year, has three goals and 10 points this fall en route to all-conference honors for the second consecutive season as well.
The trio of Belsky, Madriaga and Scruggs anchored a Bears' defense that has allowed just six goals all season including two in conference play.
Scruggs, a two-time first-team all-league honoree, has a 0.42 goals-against average with 63 saves and six shutouts entering this week's conference tournament.
L-R freshman forwards Garcelle Alequine (Wilmington, Del.) and Kendall Smith (Asheville, N.C.) were named to the all-conference second team. Both players are currently tied for second on the squad in goals scored with six.
Lenoir-Rhyne (13-1-2, 9-0) won its third consecutive league championship including second straight regular season crown outright this year. The Bear are also ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II.
L-R, the top seed in the Food Lion SAC Tournament, will host eighth-seeded Mars Hill (6-12) in the quarterfinal round today at 4:00 p.m.
