No.11 Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Wins SAC Title PDF Print

The 11th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (13-1-2, 9-0) won the South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship outright for the second straight year with a 2-0 win over Anderson (7-6-3, 4-3-2) Saturday afternoon

at Trojan Stadium. L-R received first-half goals from freshman midfielders Garcelle Alequine (Wilmington, Del.) and Kendall Smith (Asheville, N.C.) as the Bears won their third straight league title.
Alequine opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a shot from about 30 yards out that reached the left corner of the net.
Smith rounded out the scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the first half with a shot just left of the box which landed in the top right corner of the net. Both Alequine and Smith now have six goals on the year.
L-R senior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) notched her sixth save of the season as she tallied three saves for the Bears, who remained unbeaten in their last 12 matches (10-0-2). Anderson's Kaityn Neipp (Anderson, S.C.) suffered the loss in goal despite finishing with seven saves.
The Bears, who held a 16-7 advantage in shots taken, also won their 19th straight league regular season contest dating back to the 2010 season.
Both teams will next compete in the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament beginning with the quarterfinal round on Tuesday. The Bears are guaranteed the top seed in this year's tournament. The pairings for the conference tournament will be announced this weekend.


Lenoir-Rhyne Suffers Setback To Anderson, 2-0, In Men's Soccer


The Anderson Men's Soccer Team (4-10-3, 4-4-1) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (6-6-4, 3-4-2), 2-0, Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference match and the regular season finale at Trojan Stadium.
The Trojans, who saw their two-match losing streak snapped, received both goals from Lars Zimmerman (Malente, GERMANY).
Zimmerman scored in both halves for the Trojans and now has a team-leading seven goals on the year.
Zimmerman opened the scoring just 4:46 into the match with a goal from the right side of the box. Tapiwa Munetsi (Anderson, S.C.) was credited with the assist.
Zimmerman's second goal came in the 68th minute in the second half with a header off a corner kick from Zak Moss (Fairfield, Ohio).
Anderson's goalkeeper, all-conference honoree Lukas Hesse (Berlin, GERMANY), earned the shutout win. Hesse stopped five Lenoir-Rhyne shots on the day.
Junior Stefan Dill (Southampton, BERMUDA) suffered the loss in goal despite making three saves for the Bears, who did hold a 11-6 advantage in shots taken.
Both teams have qualified for the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament, which begins on Tuesday. The pairings will be announced by the league office this weekend.
