NCDOT To Close US 421 Bridge Tonight PDF Print

Traveling to the Winston-Salem area this weekend? The N.C. Department of Transportation is closing U.S. 421 North at Shallowford Road (Exit 246) near Lewisville, starting tonight at 8 p.m. for bridge preservation work. Hopes are that the NCDOT will reopen the road by Monday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m., weather permitting. The DOT says the closure is necessary to allow crews to perform preservation work on the U.S. 421 North bridge over the Yadkin River. Crews will use high-powered jets of water to remove any deteriorated concrete from the bridge, then will place a layer of latex-modified concrete on the bridge’s surface. These enhancements will improve the ride quality for motorists, as well as help the 54-year-old bridge last longer by sealing and protecting the pavement from water damage. With the work is under way, NCDOT will encourage through traffic on U.S. 421 North to take I-40 West to I-77 North and follow it back to U.S. 421 North. For local traffic, NCDOT will install a tapered closure on U.S. 421 North to help it continue to flow safely and smoothly around the work zone. Just south of Shallowford Road (Exit 246), the department will close the left lane of the highway. At Shallowford Road (Exit 246), crews will close the right lane, completely shutting down that side of the road.
At that point, U.S. 421 North traffic must take the following detour route:
·    Take Exit 246 to Shallowford Road;
·    At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Shallowford Road;
·    Follow Shallowford Road for 3.3 miles;
·    Turn right onto Dinkins Bottoms Road;
·    Follow Dinkins Bottoms Road for 1 mile to the U.S. 421 junction; and
·    Turn left onto the U.S. 421 North entrance ramp to return to the highway.
NCDOT will help guide motorists around the closure, using large message boards and signs. Drivers may experience traffic delays while the closure is in effect. The department encourages motorists to take alternate routes, if possible, to avoid the area.
