Sunday, Deputies and Investigators with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office arrested Travis Wayne Carpenter, 25, the Newland man charged with the theft of a motor vehicle in an incident that day, then was charged with a laundry list of other counts. According to investigators, Carpenter stole a 1 ton pickup truck and a low boy trailer from a home in Newland on Saturday, October 20 and took the vehicle on a rampage at the home of family members in Banner Elk. While only cosmetic was done to the stolen truck and trailer, additional vehicles were also damaged during the crime spree. Both the truck and the trailer were later located by deputies in and around the Wilderness Trail subdivision located off of Smokey Straight. Carpenter was located and arrested by deputies and taken before Magistrate Bruce Lacey where he was placed under a $12,000 secured bond. While Carpenter reportedly denies all of the accusations against him, he remains in custody at the Avery County Detention Facility awaiting a court date of December 25, 2012.
