Martin Named SoCon Specialist Of Week PDF Print

The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for games played Saturday, Oct. 13. Georgia Southern’s Dominique Swope has been named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Western Carolina’s Rock Williams was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Chattanooga’s Jacob Huesman was selected as the Freshman of the Week, while Appalachian State’s Sam Martin was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.

 


SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sam Martin, Appalachian State, Sr., P/PK, Fayetteville, Ga.Martin had a strong kicking performance for the Mountaineers in Appalachian State’s 28-25 come-from-behind win at No. 25 Samford.  Martin averaged 48.9 yards per punt on seven attempts.  He placed two punts inside the Samford 20-yard line and booted a 60-yarder in the first quarter.  Martin also handled the kickoff chores for the Mountaineers and placed four of his five kickoffs in the Samford end zone and forced two touchbacks.  His only kick that did not reach the end zone was a squib kick in the game’s final minute.Other Nominees: Darreion Robinson (Georgia Southern), Greg Peranich (Samford), Nick Pollard (Chattanooga), Clark Sechrest (Western Carolina) and Christian Reed (Wofford). 
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dominique Swope, Georgia Southern, So., RB, Buford, Ga.Dominique Swope carried 25 times for 137 yards and scored two touchdowns as Georgia Southern topped No. 4 Wofford 17-9 Saturday in Statesboro, Ga.  With Georgia Southern trailing 6-3, Swope scored on a four-yard plunge with 46 seconds remaining in the first half to give GSU the lead at the break.  He scored his second touchdown of the day on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter to push the Eagles ahead, 17-6.  It was Swope’s eighth career 100-yard rushing performance.  The sophomore has scored at least one touchdown in every game this season.   Other Nominees: Steven Miller (Appalachian State), Darien Robinson (The Citadel), Fabian Truss (Samford), Terrell Robinson (Chattanooga), Troy Mitchell (Western Carolina) and Eric Breitenstein (Wofford).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rock Williams, Western Carolina, Sr., LB, Howell, Mich.Senior linebacker Rock Williams recorded a career-high 24 tackles in Western Carolina’s loss (45-31) at The Citadel.  Williams’ 24 tackles tied for the 10th-highest single-game total in league history and were the most since Appalachian State’s Corey Weaver tallied 25 stops against Elon in 2006.  Williams was credited with 17 solo tackles and seven assists.  He recorded a forced fumble and fumble recovery on the same play in the third quarter that set up a go-ahead score for the Catamounts. Other Nominees: Adam Scott (Appalachian State), Carson Smith (The Citadel), Blake Riley (Georgia Southern), Jaquiski Tartt (Samford), Davis Tull (Chattanooga) and Kevin Thomas (Wofford).
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Jacob Huesman, Chattanooga, Fr., QB, Chattanooga, Tenn.Freshman Jacob Huesman earned the start at wide receiver for the Mocs and turned in a strong all-around performance as Chattanooga topped Furman 31-10 Saturday.  Huesman caught three passes for 32 yards as a receiver.  He also took snaps under center and completed 18 of 23 pass attempts for 171 yards with two touchdowns.  Huesman found Terrell Robinson on a 38-yard touchdown to give the Mocs a 10-7 lead going into halftime.  He hooked up with Robinson again from 14 yards out to put UTC up 17-7 in the middle of the third quarter.  Huesman also carried the ball 22 times for 59 yards in the win.Other Nominees: Sean Price (Appalachian State), Alex Hanks (Georgia Southern), Tony Philpot (Samford), Troy Mitchell (Western Carolina) and Cam Flowers (Wofford).
