The Watuaga High women's tennis team is aiming its sights on post-season play. The Pioneers (14-0), Northwestern 3A/4A Conference champions, produced four regional qualifiers on Wednesday at South Caldwell High School in

the NW3A/4A Conference Qualifier. Meredith Smith and Hannah Petersen qualified in singles play; Emily Burwell and Nicole Fox, who teamed up for some big wins at No.2 doubles this fall in dual competition, qualfied for regionals in doubles play.
The Class 4A Regional championships will be held next Friday and Saturday, October 19-20 at Cornelius-Hough. The seeding meeting begins at 1 p.m. competition starts at 2 p.m. on Friday. The semifinals and finals will be held on Saturday. The top four finishers in singles and doubles play qualify for the state finals October 26-27. The Class 4A State Finals will be held at the Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh.
WHS begins dual-team state playoff competition at home Tuesday afternoon at home. The Pioneers, the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the NW3A/4A, will play the No.2 seed from the Metro 4A Conference. Those pairings should be released some time Saturday night or Sunday afternoon.

NOTES: Burwell and Fox advanced by knocking off South Caldwell's No.1 doubles team of Rachel Haas and Claire Staudemire in the finals. Smith and Petersen made the finals in singles play, but didn't play each other. Smith also got sick. Smith was seeded No.1 and Petersen No.2 at the qualifiers (and according to coach Anna DeChellis, "the girls wanted it that way"). Also, the doubles team of Annika Davidson and Kelsi Kanoy just missed qualifying for regionals losing 11-9 against Maggie Haas and Megan Laws of the Spartans in a tiebreaker.
