Grier, Truss, Bradberry, Hanks Receive Weekly Honors PDF Print

The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for games played Saturday, Sept. 22. Samford’s Fabian Truss has been named

the Offensive Player of the Week, while Appalachian State’s Brandon Grier was named the Defensive Player of the Week.  Samford’s James Bradberry was selected as the Freshman of the Week, while Georgia Southern’s Alex Hanks was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brandon Grier, Appalachian State, Sr., LB, Charlotte, N.C.Grier led the Appalachian State defense Saturday as the Mountaineers posted a 34-17 victory at Chattanooga.  The senior linebacker finished with seven tackles, including one for loss, a sack, a fumble recovery, a quarterback hurry and an interception return for a touchdown.  With Appalachian State holding a 20-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Grier recovered a UTC fumble at the Mocs’ 14-yard line.  The Mountaineers scored a touchdown on their next offensive play to surge ahead 27-10.  Greir then picked off a pass and raced 70 yards on UTC’s ensuing possession to give the Mountaineers their final score of the game.Other Nominees: Carl Robinson (The Citadel), Jonathan Spain (Elon), John Stevenson (Georgia Southern), James Bradberry (Samford), Wes Dothard (Chattanooga) and Rock Williams (Western Carolina).


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Fabian Truss, Samford, Jr., RB, Birmingham, Ala.Truss carried 23 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 25-21 come-from-behind win at Western Carolina.  The junior scored on a 25-yard run early in the third quarter to tie the score at 7-7.  With the Bulldogs trailing 21-18, Truss scored on a one-yard plunge with 5:00 remaining in the game to push Samford ahead, 25-21.  Truss tallied 53 of his rushing yards in the fourth quarter and added five receptions for 23 yards on the afternoon.  Other Nominees: Sean Price (Appalachian State), Darien Robinson (The Citadel), Aaron Mellette (Elon), Jerodis Williams (Furman), Ezayi Youyoute (Georgia Southern) and Faysal Shafaat (Chattanooga).


FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: James Bradberry, Samford, Fr., DB, Pleasant Grove, Ala.Redshirt freshman James Bradberry intercepted two passes in Samford’s victory over Western Carolina.  Bradberry’s first pick came late in the second quarter when he intercepted a WCU pass at the Samford 4-yard line to end a Catamount scoring threat.  Early in the third quarter, Bradberry intercepted Eddie Sullivan’s pass at the WCU 38-yard line and returned it 22 yards to the Western 16 to set up a Cameron Yaw field goal, which gave the Bulldogs a 10-7 lead.Other Nominees: Tracy Coppedge (Elon), Reese Hannon (Furman), Alex Hanks (Georgia Southern), Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga) and Sertonuse Harris (Western Carolina). SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Alex Hanks, Georgia Southern, Fr., PK, Marietta, Ga.Making his first career start for the Eagles, true freshman Alex Hanks kicked a 32-yard field goal with 3:40 remaining in the game to lift Georgia Southern past Elon, 26-23, Saturday night.  Hanks booted a 27-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to push GSU ahead 16-13 in a back-and-forth third quarter that saw three lead changes.  Hanks also made two extra points in the win.Other Nominees: Drew Stewart (Appalachian State), Adam Shreiner (Elon), Greg Peranich (Samford), Nick Pollard (Chattanooga), and Clark Sechrest (Western Carolina).
